Iran abolishes mandatory hijab for women
Iran has abolished the mandatory hijab law - it is now a personal choice for every woman. Mohammadreza Bahoner, a member of the Council for the Examination of the Existence of Existing Documents, announced that the "Law on Chastity" no longer exists.
According to him, this rule is no longer considered a legal obligation.
The police have been informed that fines and other penalties or restrictions will not be applied to women who do not wear the hijab. Citizens can report violations of their rights to a hotline.
The statement comes after years of resistance, including the arrest and death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in 2022 after she was caught wearing the wrong headscarf by the "morality police," sparking mass protests for women's rights.
