Indian government bans prayers at mosque in Kashmir

The Indian government has banned prayers at the Jamia Masjid, the largest mosque in Kashmir, on the last nights of Ramadan, TRT reported.

According to the mosque's chief imam, Umar Farooq, thousands of Muslims were dissatisfied with the closure of the mosque on the night of "Laylatul Qadr."

"For years, Muslims have been praying at the Jama Masjid on this night. The government's restrictions are causing serious public opposition," he said in a statement.

The report says that since the Indian government revoked Kashmir's autonomous status in 2019, it has also banned Friday prayers in the territory.
