India wants to divert water flowing to Pakistan to its territory
India wants to divert "surplus water" from three rivers that flow into Pakistan to its states of Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan. Work is underway to build a 113-kilometer-long canal to this end.
NDTV reported that the project is being implemented under the Indus Waters Treaty signed between India and Pakistan in 1960. It aims to "effectively utilize" the water of the Jhelum, Chenab and Indus rivers. Currently, India does not use a large part of the water of these rivers. Because their natural course runs along a trajectory that is "less beneficial" for the country.
The project involves building new canals to drain the "surplus water." Home Minister Amit Shah has said that Pakistan will now "suffer from every drop of water."
He announced that the waters of the Indus River would be diverted to the city of Ganganagar for three years.
