India stops water flow through dams on border with Pakistan

India has temporarily restricted water flow through the Baglihar Dam on the Chenab River, which borders Pakistan. The PTI news agency reported that a similar measure may also be taken at the Kishanganga Dam on the Jhelum River.

According to official data, the Baglihar hydroelectric power stations in Jammu and Kashmir and Kishanganj in northern Kashmir allow India to control the amount and timing of water released into the country .

The Indus River Treaty, signed between India and Pakistan in 1960, has guaranteed water access for both countries, particularly Pakistan. This treaty has not been violated, even in times of armed conflict.

However, after the April 22 bombing in Jammu and Kashmir, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the country was prepared to give a "devastating response" to "terrorism."

Against this background, the suspension of the water flow is being interpreted not only as a technical, but also as a strategic and political decision.
