The Bangladesh Armed Forces have officially allowed female military personnel to wear the hijab as part of their military uniform.

It is noted that this order is a progressive step for the country's army, previously women in military uniform were not allowed to wear headscarves.

The decision to lift the hijab ban was made in September and the new policy allows female officers, soldiers and medical personnel in the armed forces to wear a hijab that matches their style of dress, Islam News Times of Karachi reported.

The ban on the hijab in the Bangladesh Armed Forces has long been a subject of controversy.

Army officials hope the new policy will encourage women to join the Bangladeshi armed forces.

Earlier, we reported that Bangladesh's interim government has given army officers the right to conduct special trials across the country within the next 60 days.
