Gun attack on school in Sweden
On February 4, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. local time, a shooting occurred on the campus of Rysbergska High School in Örebro, Sweden. The attacker killed 10 people with an automatic weapon. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson called the incident "the worst mass shooting in Swedish history."
Police said the attacker was among the victims, that the incident was not "terrorist-related" and that there was no threat of further attacks. The attack took place at 1:30 p.m. local time on the campus of Risbergska High School.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson condemned the incident at a press conference with Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer, saying the motive for the attack was still unknown. He said the incident "should not have happened in Sweden."
Justice Minister Strömmer confirmed that the attacker died at the scene and that his identity was not previously known to police. The motives and objectives of the attack are currently under investigation.
The attack took place in the city of Örebro, 200 kilometers west of Stockholm. Örebro has a population of about 160,000 and is Sweden's sixth largest city.
As a reminder, one of the most serious school attacks in Sweden occurred in 2015 at Kronan School in Trollhättan. In this attack, a sword-wielding attacker killed two people and injured several others.
