Girls' right to education in headscarves revoked again in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus

While in southern Cyprus, schoolgirls were allowed to wear headscarves in schools, this right was again revoked in the north of the island.

The Constitutional Court of Northern Cyprus has overturned a Cabinet decision allowing girls to attend school wearing the hijab.

The court's ruling was greeted with jubilation in some quarters, the report said. Selma Eylem, president of the Cypriot Secondary Education Teachers' Union, joined a group of like-minded colleagues in calling the ban "a victory for secularism."
