French Senate continues fight against hijab

The French Senate has approved a bill to ban the wearing of the hijab during sporting events. The bill was supported by a majority of 210 senators. Of these, 81 voted against the bill, while 38 abstained.

The bill, initiated by Republican Senator Michel Savin, also prohibits collective prayer in sports facilities.

Leftists are accusing the Republican Party, which has a majority in the National Assembly, of discriminating against Muslim women. Speaking in the Senate, socialist Sylvie Robert said the law would lead to divisions in society.

"This bill was developed with a specific political goal in mind: to fight Islam under the pretext of defending secularism," he said.
