The country's authorities announced three days of mourning and promised to provide all necessary assistance to the residents of the affected areas.

The rains caused power outages, road closures, and suspension of regular and express trains.

Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles called the natural disaster in the country unprecedented.

Officials warned that the death toll could rise.

The military and aviation are participating in the search and rescue operation, the bodies of the dead are being searched, including with the help of drones, and military psychologists are working with the victims, the Spanish press reports.

The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that the EU will help coordinate the work of Spanish rescuers using the Copernicus satellite system. Other European countries also offered help.

On Thursday, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez will visit Valencia and participate in a crisis center meeting, El Pais reports.

The weather started to improve in the east of the country on Wednesday, but meteorologists warned that the rain was moving from the northeast towards Catalonia.

Flood warnings have been issued in some other regions of the country.
