The population of EU countries where deaths exceed births will increase in 2023 due to migration. During the last year, the total population increased from 447.6 million to 449.2 million people. This is confirmed by the data of the European Union announced on Thursday.
According to Eurostat, the population of 20 countries of the European Union has decreased, while the population has increased in seven countries. The largest population decrease was recorded in Italy (-179,419 people), and the largest increase was recorded in Germany (1.12 million people).
Since 2012, the birth rate in Europe has been negative or stagnant. Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a decrease in 2020 and 2021, and an increase in the following two years.
Migration includes, among other things, Ukrainian refugees fleeing the Russian invasion, Eurostat said in a statement. As of March 2023, about 4 million people from Ukraine have applied for temporary asylum in the EU.
Many European countries are experiencing an aging population due to increased life expectancy.
