As a result of the war in Sudan, about 10 million people have left their homes
The UN Migration Agency has reported that the number of internally displaced people in Sudan, which has been going on for more than a year, could soon exceed 10 million. The UN body has also warned that there is a "danger of famine" in Sudan. About 18 million people in the country suffer from acute malnutrition, of which 3.6 million are children.
The number of internally displaced people due to the military conflict in Sudan could soon exceed 10 million, the United Nations migration agency said.
Fighting began in April 2023 in the capital, Khartoum, and quickly spread across the country. Ethnic bloodshed has resumed in West Darfur province. Millions of people were forced to leave their homes.
“How much suffering and loss of life must the Sudanese people go through before the world takes notice? Is 10 million internally displaced people not enough for urgent global action? - said the head of the mission of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Sudan, Muhammad Rifat. "Each of these 10 million lives represents a profound human tragedy that requires urgent attention."
Last week, the IOM recorded 9.9 million internally displaced people across the African nation. According to the agency, 2.8 million people were internally displaced in Sudan before the current war. In general, about 12 million people left their homes, and more than two million fled to neighboring countries - Egypt and Chad.
Rifat said that more than half of the internally displaced are women, and a quarter are children under the age of five.
"A lack of funding is preventing the provision of adequate housing, food and health services. "There are growing serious concerns about the long-term impact of the population movement on the social and economic structure of the state," he added.
The UN body has also warned that there is a "danger of famine" in Sudan. About 18 million people in the country suffer from acute malnutrition, of which 3.6 million are children.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs also reported that the African country is experiencing the largest internal migration crisis on the planet.

"Sudan was a country that generously accepted more than a million refugees. Now it is experiencing the biggest internal migration crisis in the world," the organization's message on the X social network says.
