Today, June 17, Chinese and Philippine ships clashed in the disputed area of the South China Sea. This was reported by the Coast Guard of the People's Republic of China.

According to the statement, the Philippine vessel "illegally invaded" the waters adjacent to the Renay Reef. This area is also called by the Filipinos "the second shore of Thomas".

"Despite repeated warnings from the Chinese side, the dangerous approach of the Philippine ship in violation of the established order led to the clashes," the report said.

For reference, Beijing considers the second bank of the Thomas as its territorial waters.

In 2016, an international tribunal overturned China's claims to 90 percent of the South China Sea, but Beijing has not recognized the ruling and continues to build artificial islands in the disputed waters.

The issue of ownership of South China waters also complicates the relationship between China and the United States. Some waters in this area are also claimed by Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam and Brunei.
