China tries to refute criticism of Uyghurs through "documentaries"
The Chinese government is once again using cultural propaganda as a tool amid growing international pressure over human rights abuses against Uyghurs in East Turkestan, particularly allegations of forced labor and genocide.
According to the Tengri Tag news agency, the fake documentary "Clouds Above the Earth," which will premiere simultaneously in China and East Turkestan on May 7, was created for this very purpose.
The film was shot by China Central Television.
It is noted that the film was previously screened as a test in the Awat district, one of the cotton-growing centers in China.
The film depicts Uyghur and Chinese families overcoming hardships together during the harvest process, a move that officials say is intended to promote the idea of "friendship between peoples."
International human rights organizations have criticized such cultural products as a cover-up of China's forced labor, religious and cultural oppression, and genocidal policies against the Uyghur people.
