China bans royal food, cigarettes and alcohol for officials
According to new guidelines issued by the State Council of China, state officials and party members are strictly prohibited from consuming rare and expensive foods (delicacies), cigarettes, and alcoholic beverages while on duty.
They are also prohibited from making large expenditures on foreign business trips, ceremonially seeing off guests at airports, using luxurious decorations at conferences, and spending money excessively.
In addition, they are also restricted from participating in gambling and hosting large parties during foreign trips.
State media is calling the decision "a way to combat waste and develop a culture of thrift."
Analysts attribute this to the fact that China is currently under great economic pressure, the ongoing trade war with the United States and the slowdown in domestic economic growth. Therefore, the government is asking officials to live a "frugal life."
