Armed attack in Dagestan: most of the dead are Muslims

On the evening of June 23, unknown persons attacked a synagogue and a church in the cities of Makhachkala and Derbent of Dagestan. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Dagestan reported that gunmen in black clothing also fired at the police post in Makhachkala. Videos circulating on social media show them firing machine guns at police cars. It is said that six policemen were killed and 12 others were injured in the shootout with the attackers. Also, at least two fighters were shot dead.

Magomed Umarov, the head of Sergokalinsky district of Dagestan, was captured. Umarov's two sons, Adil and Osman, were said to have participated in the attacks on churches and synagogues in Makhachkala and Derbent, and both were shot dead. At the moment, an anti-terrorist operation regime has been introduced in Dagestan: roads leading to and from Makhachkala and Derbent are blocked, police are checking cars.
