On the night of January 3, 2020, the United States conducted an operation to eliminate the commander of the Iranian special forces, Qassem Soleimani, and the deputy head of the Iraqi Shiite militia, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis. Washington considered them to be involved in the December 31, 2019 attack on the American embassy in Baghdad.

In response, Iran attacked American bases in Iraq, including Ain al-Assad. Initially, then US President Donald Trump and Pentagon officials announced that there were no casualties after the attack. Later, the military had to admit that there were wounded.
