The number of victims of the explosion in the Tabas coal mine in South Khorasan province of Iran is increasing. The number of people who lost their lives reached 52, and at least 20 people were injured in the explosion that occurred as a result of methane gas leakage in blocks B and C of the mine.

At the time of the incident, 69 people were working at the site, said Javad Genaatzoda, governor of South Khorasan. It was not reported how many people may have been trapped under the rubble.

Tabas mine covers an area of more than 30,000 square kilometers and is located approximately 540 km from Tehran, the capital of Iran. Iran's state news agency IRNA calls Tabas "the richest and largest coal district" in the country.
