A mass wedding ceremony was held in Afghanistan with the participation of 50 couples.

In Afghanistan, 50 couples have had a mass wedding ceremony, avoiding the big effort for a traditional wedding, the BBC reports.

The brides-to-be sat in a separate wing out of sight and did not appear in front of the guests, local media reported.

The event in Kabul was organized by a charity organization and provided the newlyweds with items such as carpets and household appliances to help them start their married lives.

A representative of the Ministry of Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vices spoke at the modest ceremony.

The Quran was read at the wedding because the Taliban government has banned singing and dancing since it returned to power in August 2021.

Then the bride and groom were escorted in cars decorated with ribbons and flowers.

18-year-old Ruhullah Rezayi explained to AFP news agency that he could not afford to hold a wedding on his own.

"A traditional wedding costs us at least 200-250 thousand Afghanis ($2,800-3,600), but this time it will cost 10-15 thousand Afghanis... We invited a total of 35 people from both families, and usually 300-400 people came," - he says.

According to the agency, this young man from Ghor region works as a laborer and earns 350 afghan per day.

According to the agency, young people find it difficult to get married for a long time because the wedding expenses are high for most people.
