Touhid Hussain, Foreign Affairs Adviser to the Interim Government of Bangladesh, announced that about 8,000 Rohingya Muslims who were forcibly displaced in Myanmar have entered Bangladesh.

According to the Dhaka Tribune, Foreign Affairs Adviser Hussain announced at a press conference on this topic that about 8,000 Rohingya Muslims who fled the conflicts in Myanmar's Rakhine state have arrived in Bangladesh.

"The country is unable to provide humanitarian asylum to more refugees and cannot accept any more Rohingya Muslims," he said.

Hussain said the country's border with Myanmar remains closed to traffic, but it is difficult to fully secure the border.

In order to "facilitate the return" of Rohingya Muslims, one of the armed rebel groups fighting the Myanmar army has noted the need to establish a communication channel with the Arakan army. Husayn added that a cabinet meeting on this issue will be held in 2-3 days.

Ethnic cleansing of Rohingya Muslims

In 2012, clashes broke out between Buddhists and Muslims in Myanmar's Rakhine state, killing thousands of people, mostly Muslims, and burning hundreds of homes and businesses.

On August 25, 2017, following attacks on border posts in Rakhine, Myanmar's military and Buddhist nationalists launched widespread violence. According to the UN, after August 2017, the number of people who fled the oppression and persecution in Rakhine and sought refuge in Bangladesh exceeded 900,000.

The UN and international human rights organizations call the violence against Rohingya Muslims "ethnic cleansing" or "genocide".
