A new UN report says more than 280 million people in 59 countries and territories around the world are suffering from food insecurity due to armed conflict, economic decline and extreme weather events.

With the ongoing Israeli offensive, the entire population of the Palestinian Gaza Strip is experiencing food insecurity, with half a million people on the brink of starvation and nearly 1.2 million people (53 percent of the population) experiencing acute levels of food insecurity.

While food insecurity is rarely caused by a single shock or hazard, it is clear that conflict, extreme weather and economic shocks are key catalysts for food insecurity in 59 countries, a recent report says.
