270,000 refugees in Syria have returned home - UN report

More than 270,000 Syrian refugees have returned to their homeland since the beginning of 2024, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) said in a statement.

According to the UN, 7.4 million people are currently living as internal refugees in the country, while another 4.9 million Syrians are seeking refuge in neighboring countries. The largest number of refugees live in Turkey (3 million) and Egypt (1.2 million).
Meanwhile, many Syrians plan to return home in the near future. The UN report notes that more than a quarter of refugees aim to return by 2025.

However, there are a number of serious problems in the refugee return process:

Housing and property rights issues;

Security issues;

Restrictions on the use of basic services;

Economic difficulties.

Experts believe that creating favorable conditions for returning refugees is important for ensuring social and economic stability in the country.

The UN and international organizations continue to provide assistance to improve the humanitarian situation in Syria.
