The Taliban government has appointed Abdul Ghaffar Tirawi as Afghanistan's ambassador to Uzbekistan, Tolo News reported. It is noted that the parties have reached an agreement on this matter and Tiravi is expected to start working in Tashkent soon.

Abdul Ghaffar Tirawi, an ethnic Uzbek, previously worked as a research director at the Supreme Court of Afghanistan. Former ambassador Mugfurullah Shahab resigned after the Taliban leader Haibatullah Akhundzoda banned the appointment of relatives of officials to public positions.

In mid-August 2024, the Prime Minister of Uzbekistan, Abdulla Aripov, announced that a positive decision was made to start the work of a new Afghan diplomat in Tashkent.

Mutual trade issues were also discussed, with the goal of increasing the volume of trade between the countries to 1 billion dollars this year, and to 3 billion dollars in the future.

Abdulla Aripov also assured that Uzbekistan will support Afghanistan in the construction of the Trans-Afghan railway worth 4.8 billion dollars. In turn, the Deputy Prime Minister of Afghanistan, Mawlavi Abdul Kabir, emphasized the importance of Uzbekistan's participation in regional projects such as TAPI (a 1735 km main gas pipeline under construction from Turkmenistan to Afghanistan, Pakistan and India) and CASA-1000, which are important for the stability and development of Afghanistan.
