Despite many objections, the construction of a nuclear power plant (NPP) based on a Russian project near Lake Tuzkon in Jizzakh has begun. "Orda" publication reported about this with reference to the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan.

According to the publication, three million more people live in the area where the NPP will be built than in Shymkent and Turkestan regions of Kazakhstan.

The project has been discussed by Uzbekistan and Russia since 2017. Finally, in 2019, a site near Tuzkon Lake was chosen. In addition to the large NPP, it is also planned to build small modular reactors with a total capacity of 330 MW. Rosatom is the main contractor of the project, which is supported by Uzbek companies.

"In response to our request, the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan assured us that there will be no leakage of radioactive materials from the NPP," the report said.

The Russian RITM-200N reactor is used in the construction. This reactor is adapted from marine technology for use on land - it has a thermal capacity of 190 MW and an electrical capacity of 55 MW, and will last for 60 years. RITM-200 reactors operate in the Russian cooling system.

"The safety of the reactor is ensured by complex protection systems that prevent accidents," added the ministry's department.

We remind you that on May 27, within the framework of Putin's state visit to Uzbekistan, a protocol was signed on amending the intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the construction of a nuclear power plant in Jizzakh.

On the other hand, a contract was concluded between the NPP Construction Directorate under the Ozatom agency and the Atomstroyexport JSC engineering company under the Rosatom structure on the construction of a low-power nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan.
