The Guardian Council of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which oversees elections, has selected 6 of the 80 candidates registered to participate in the June 28 presidential election following the unexpected death of President Ibrahim Raisi. Masoud Pezeshkian , a representative of Tabriz in Iran's parliament, criticized the government's lack of transparency during the nationwide protests sparked by the September 2022 death of 22-year-old Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini in police custody.
