US President Joe Biden's son, Hunter Biden, has been charged with nine counts of evading $1.4 million in taxes.

According to documents filed in Los Angeles court on Thursday, Biden is accused of tax evasion and filing false or fraudulent tax returns, and of embezzling millions of dollars.

"The defendant engaged in a four-year scheme to evade at least $1.4 million in self-employed federal taxes for the tax years 2016 through 2019," the indictment, filed in the U.S. District Court for the State of California, states.

If convicted, Biden faces up to 17 years in prison.

The indictment is the second criminal case brought against Biden by David Weiss, the special counsel appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland to oversee the investigation into the president's son. Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty to three firearms charges last month.

The latest criminal case could complicate President Joe Biden's 2024 re-election bid. That's because Republicans allege his son made millions of dollars abusing his father's position through business deals and consulting services in foreign countries, including Ukraine, China and Romania.

In addition, Republicans on Thursday announced plans to launch an impeachment inquiry into Biden.
