The number of victims of the landslide in Papua New Guinea in the southern Pacific Ocean has exceeded 2 thousand people. As a result of the natural disaster, about 150 houses were buried. Search and rescue operations are ongoing in the region.

On May 23, a landslide occurred in the village of Kaokalam in Enga province, 600 km northwest of Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea. He also blocked the entrance to the city of Porgera, which is home to a large gold mine.

Later, on May 26, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that more than 670 people had died in a landslide in Papua New Guinea. According to Serhan Aktoprak, IOM's head of mission in the region, the death toll is based on a revised estimate by officials in Yambali village and Enga province that more than 150 houses were submerged in the landslide.

Officials said a search and rescue operation in the area is ongoing, with rescuers hoping to find survivors at a depth of 6-8 meters.
