Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, confirmed that since October 7 there have been more than 449 attacks on health facilities in Gaza and the West Bank, saying that "it is now impossible for medical workers to work ."

Speaking at a special session on the health situation in the occupied Palestinian territories organized by WHO's executive committee on Sunday, Tedros noted that the conflict is having a devastating impact on the health situation in the Gaza Strip.

"More than 17,000 people died in Gaza, 7,000 of them were children, and we don't know how many more were buried under the rubble of houses. There are more than 46,000 wounded ," he said.

"1.9 million people - almost the entire population of the Gaza Strip - have been displaced and are seeking shelter wherever they can find it. "No one is safe in the Gaza Strip," he added.

He stressed that the health system should never be a target , saying there was an average of one shower per 700 people and one toilet per 150 people, with warning signs of epidemic diseases such as diarrhea and sari sickness .

Only 14 of the original 36 hospitals are partially functioning, he said.

"As more and more people move into smaller and more cramped spaces, overcrowding, lack of food, water, shelter and sanitation creates ideal conditions for disease to spread, " he said.

The WHO chief expressed his support for UN Secretary-General António Guterres' call for a permanent and immediate humanitarian ceasefire to ensure the delivery of the most urgently needed aid to Gaza's most vulnerable people.

" Peace is the only way to protect and improve the health of Gazans. I deeply regret that the Security Council was unable to pass such a ceasefire resolution last Friday, " he said, referring to a US veto that blocked international calls for a ceasefire.
