Iran has started building a wall along its eastern borders with Pakistan and Afghanistan. According to Iran's Tabnak portal, the purpose of the project is to fight fuel, food and medicine smuggling and illegal migration. The height of the wall is 4 meters, and its length is about 300 kilometers.

According to the commander of the Iranian border police, Ahmed Ali Ghodarzi, the construction works have already started in the southern Sistan and Baluchistan regions and Razavi Khorasan, the state news agency IRNA reports. The military leader also noted that at the next stage the borders in the west of the country - in the regions of Ilam, Kurdistan and West Azerbaijan - will be strengthened.

Godarzi called security on the border with Afghanistan and Pakistan the main priority of the project. He noted that about 80 percent of the drug trade to Iran goes through these countries, making these areas the most vulnerable in terms of security.

The construction of the wall is financed by the state, currently the main efforts are aimed at equipping the construction sites.

At the same time, at the beginning of 2021, Iran began to build a similar wall on the border with Afghanistan. Although the total length of the border between the two countries is more than 900 km, about 60 km of the wall was built at that time.

Iran first spoke about the construction of barriers in January of this year, after the sensational terrorist attacks in Kermon and Sistan-Baluchistan. At that time, the authorities of Tehran noted that they wanted to build a barrier to prevent the entry of terrorist groups from neighboring Pakistan and Afghanistan.

At the same time, the regional media point out that this initiative has caused conflicts with the Afghan authorities - they claim that the border can be closed only with the mutual consent of the parties. The Afghan leadership stated that Iran did not ask Kabul's opinion when the construction started.

During the construction of the wall, negotiations between Iran and Afghanistan over the water resources of the Helmand River are also ongoing - it is unclear how the construction of the wall will affect the use of the waterway and the use of water on both sides of the river.
