The former head of government of the South Asian republic is accused of killing Abu Syed, a grocery store owner who was shot dead during protests against employment quotas in Dhaka's Muhammadpur district on July 19. According to the publication , Syed died as a result of police shooting. A case was filed in the Dhaka court on behalf of Amir Shatil, a resident of Muhammadpur, regarding the murder of a local businessman.

Apart from Sheikh Hasina, other accused in the case include former secretary general of the ruling Awami League party Obaidul Quader, former interior minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun and other senior police officers .

Under the Bangladesh Penal Code, the maximum penalty for murder includes life imprisonment or the death penalty.

We remind you that on August 5, Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country. Demonstrations against him and his government began in early July after the decision to allocate a quota for civil service to the families of those who fought for independence.
