Representatives of the Palestinian movement Hamas and the Fatah party signed an agreement in Beijing to end decades of conflict and strengthen Palestinian unity. In addition to Hamas and Fatah, representatives of 12 other Palestinian movements participated in the talks between the Palestinian groups that started on July 21.

Representatives of the Palestinian Hamas movement and the Fatah party signed an agreement in Beijing to end the decades-long conflict and strengthen Palestinian unity, AP reports citing Chinese state media.

Chinese TV channel CGTN reported on social media that on July 21, talks between Palestinian groups began in Beijing, and on July 22, representatives of Hamas and Fatah, as well as 12 other Palestinian movements, met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Wang Yi welcomed the signing of the document, saying that the parties had agreed to form an "interim government of national reconciliation" after the end of hostilities in the Gaza Strip, according to Western media.

Al-Jazeera TV reported that the agreement aims to preserve the Palestinian Authority after the end of hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

In the summer of 2007, Hamas, which had won elections a year earlier, expelled Fatah from the Gaza Strip and has ruled the enclave alone ever since. Hamas and the Palestinian National Authority have held several talks on unification since then, but none have come to fruition.

The Hamas movement called the signing of the declaration by the Palestinian factions after three days of talks in the Chinese capital a historic event.

At the signing ceremony of the document, a member of the Hamas delegation, Musa Abu Marzouk, said that the agreement reached is an important step towards full reconciliation within Palestine.

"We are seeing unprecedented support for the Palestinian issue. Today we are signing an agreement with the Palestinian factions based on considerations of national reconciliation. Friends, this is a historic moment," Marzuk said.

The next step is to implement the provisions of the declaration, which would complete the reconciliation process and create an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital, the Hamas spokesman added.

Hamas advocates the creation of a general government in which all Palestinian factions are represented.
