During the visit of Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Iraq, a memorandum of understanding was signed between Turkey, Iraq, Qatar and the UAE on the implementation of the "Road of Development" project, which envisages the construction of the shortest road connecting Eastern and European countries. This route is expected to shorten the distance between China and Europe compared to the sea route through the Suez Canal, saving time and money.

During the first official visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Iraq in 12 years, a memorandum of understanding was signed between Turkey, Iraq, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates on the "Road to Development" project.

The Road to Progress project is expected to shorten the distance between China and Europe compared to the sea route through the Suez Canal, saving time and money.

"Ships pass through the Suez Canal in 35 days. The journey through the Cape of Good Hope takes up to 45 days. "If we complete the construction of the development road, the transportation time will be reduced to 25 days ," said Abdulkadir Uraloglu, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure of Turkey.

The Development Road project will connect Turkey to Iraq's El Fao port on the Persian Gulf through a 1,200-kilometer rail and road network.

The first phase of this project will be commissioned in 2028.

The estimated cost of the project, which aims to be a "new Silk Road" between Turkey and Iraq, is 17 billion dollars, and is expected to be invested by Turkey, Iraq, Qatar, the UAE and China.

The governments of Turkey and Iraq will invest $23.8 billion in the Road to Progress project, along with ongoing work (building additional ports and reorganizing road infrastructure in both countries, etc.).

For information, as a result of the Turkish President's visit, a total of 26 documents were signed between Turkey and Iraq in military-political, cultural, educational, Islamic and other areas.
