23 people associated with a number of terrorist and criminal groups were arrested in the operational operations conducted in 8 regions of Kazakhstan, weapons and narcotics were confiscated. It is said that the activities of those arrested were carried out under the guise of religion.

Kazakhstan's special services have neutralized a number of groups involved in kidnapping, extortion, drug and weapons trade, as well as terrorist propaganda, the press service of the National Security Committee (NSC) reported.

"On February 17, 2024, eight groups were neutralized in Aktobe, Atyrau, East Kazakhstan, Jambil, West Kazakhstan, Turkestan regions and the city of Shymkent as part of the operation carried out by the National Security Committee together with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and under the coordination of the Prosecutor General's Office," the agency said.

A total of 23 people were arrested. Among them are supporters of the extremist movement. 17 persons were placed in temporary custody, and the rest were released on the basis of a request to be present when called.

According to the ICRC, in a number of cases, criminals justified their actions by misunderstanding religious commandments. During the search, firearms, ammunition, drugs and extremist literature were confiscated from them.

About 250 law enforcement officers participated in special operations in eight regions of Kazakhstan at the same time.

In November 2023, Kazakhstan's intelligence services neutralized a cell of an extremist movement that allegedly denied the state's secularism and planned terrorist attacks to destroy it.
