India fired missiles at several targets in Pakistan-administered Kashmir on the night of May 7. Analysts say the incident marks a significant deterioration in relations between the two nuclear-armed states and a direct escalation of hostilities. India and Pakistan have other points of conflict beyond the Muslim-majority state of Jammu and Kashmir: for centuries, the degree of intermarriage between Indians and Pakistanis has not been high.
