Why is force used against the weak in the family?

The strength of the family directly affects the stability of the nation and society. For this reason, Islam has paid great attention to protecting the family and protecting it from destruction. However, recently, there has been an increase in family problems and divorces in our society. Some propaganda seems to call for solving family problems through divorce. However, divorce is considered a last resort in Islam, since its consequences can be negative in many ways.

Statistics and causes of domestic violence

According to statistics, family problems and violence exist in Uzbekistan:

In 2021, law enforcement agencies received 39,343 complaints of violence against women. Of these, 87 percent (34,330) were committed within the family.
According to the survey conducted from December 2022 to January 2023 , one in three (33%) of the 183 women surveyed reported experiencing violence from their spouse.
The actual numbers may be higher, as many women do not contact law enforcement.

Factors leading to family problems and violence:

Economic difficulties - unemployment and poverty - cause family discord.

Alcohol and drug use - Alcoholism and drug abuse are one of the main causes of domestic violence.

Personal and family conflicts - As misunderstandings between spouses increase, quarrels in the family increase.

Psychological problems - the mental state of some people causes conflicts in the family.

Conflicts between the bride and groom and the mother-in-law - the cause of many divorces can be traced back to disagreements between the bride and the mother-in-law.

Legal illiteracy - ignorance of family rights and obligations - leaves spouses defenseless or deepens conflicts.

How does Islam protect the family?

Islam has established the following basic principles for resolving family problems:

Ajrim is the last resort
Although Islam considers divorce to be permissible, it views it as a last resort. Our Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The most hated of all lawful things in the sight of Allah is divorce."

This hadith shows how negative the consequences of divorce are. Divorce not only hurts the spouses, but also the children, and undermines the stability of society.

Solving problems with advice

Allah Almighty says in the Quran:
" If there is a dispute (between husband and wife) , appoint an arbitrator from each of them. If they (the arbitrators) intend to reconcile, Allah will reconcile between them." (Surah An-Nisa, verse 35)

This verse shows the importance of resolving family disputes through counseling and third-party intervention.

Being kind to women prevents many conflicts

Our Prophet (peace be upon him) was the most beautiful example in family life and taught us the best way to deal with women:

"The most perfect of believers in faith is the one with the best character. And the best of you are those who treat their wives best."

Islam has made the man responsible for the material and spiritual well-being of the family. The man is obliged to provide for the family and be kind to it. The woman, on the other hand, is responsible for maintaining the family environment and adding love and affection.

Prohibition of violence

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Can any of you beat your wife like a slave and then sleep with her in the evening?"

This hadith indicates that violence in the family is absolutely unacceptable. Husbands and wives should treat each other with respect.

Ways to strengthen the family
Increasing religious and legal literacy

Couples should learn about family rights and responsibilities before getting married. Pre-marital family education courses should be organized.

Development of family counseling centers

Counseling centers with religious scholars, psychologists, and lawyers should be opened. Third-party intervention should be established to resolve family disputes before divorce.

Ensuring economic stability

Unemployed men should be provided with jobs through employment centers. Vocational training programs for women should be expanded.

Promoting Islamic morality

The media and social media should promote responsible aspects of family life. It is also necessary to prepare young people for family life based on Islamic upbringing.

Conclusion

Domestic violence is indeed a problem. But divorce is not always the solution. Islam teaches us to preserve the family, to solve problems with patience, advice and understanding. After all, preserving the family means preserving society!
