Uzbekistan steps up measures to prevent torture during investigations
The Legislative Chamber of Uzbekistan has adopted a draft law aimed at preventing torture during criminal proceedings. The document establishes a procedure for mandatory medical examinations of individuals in pre-trial detention facilities before their placement in a pre-trial detention facility.
At the regular session of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan, held on January 21, a draft law aimed at preventing cases of torture of a person during criminal proceedings was considered.
The draft law, by introducing relevant amendments to the Law "On Detention in Pre-Trial Criminal Proceedings", establishes a procedure for mandatory medical examination of a person before placing him in a pre-trial detention center, within 2 hours of his arrival at the pre-trial detention center.
A procedure is being established to immediately notify the prosecutor if injuries or trauma are discovered on a person's body during a medical examination.
The bill was passed by the deputies in the second and third readings and sent to the Senate.
