Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan launch "green" energy corridor project
Tashkent, December 28, 2024

Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Azerbaijan have signed a founding agreement on the creation of a "green energy corridor" to European countries, the press service of the Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan reported.

The agreement was signed online on December 27 between the main electricity grid operators of the three countries - Azerbaijan's Azerenerji, Kazakhstan's KEGOC, and the National Electric Networks of Uzbekistan.

This agreement aims to implement the agreement signed by the heads of state on November 13, and also serves the goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and protecting the environment, in line with the European Union's Green Deal initiatives.

Baku will be the center
The parties agreed to establish a joint venture in Baku. The Italian company CESI was appointed as a consultant to develop the feasibility study for the project.

Export plans
Uzbekistan plans to export excess "green" electricity to Europe via Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan starting in 2030. According to the Ministry of Energy, in 2030, Uzbekistan will be able to export 10-15 billion kWh of electricity abroad.

Deputy Minister of Energy Umid Mamadaminov said that Uzbekistan's electricity generation capacity will reach 135 billion kWh. Excess capacity will be exported to European countries.

Azerbaijan intends to implement a project to lay a cable under the Black Sea to connect Central Asia, the Caucasus, Europe, the Caspian and Black Seas through a single energy corridor.
