Uzbekistan grants new rights to transgender citizens

According to amendments to the Cabinet of Ministers' resolution, a citizen who changes gender in Uzbekistan can now also change his or her name.

To do this, he must submit a medical certificate from a healthcare institution confirming gender reassignment, along with the relevant application.

Former MP Rasul Kusherbaev explained that under the new regulations, it will be possible to change the name Dilshod to Dilshoda without any obstacles.

Previously, it was possible to make changes to birth, death, marriage, and other certificates in case of gender change. However, changing the name was allowed only on the basis of historical and national traditions, in accordance with Article 15 of the Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan "On the State Language".

It is regrettable that the will of our people and their thousands of years of traditions are not taken into account when making such changes.
