Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan exchange prisoners
Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan have formalized an agreement on the transfer of convicted citizens to each other. The Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan adopted a law on the ratification of this agreement on January 31. The document has been sent to the Senate.
The agreement was signed on July 18, 2024, during the visit of Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov to Tashkent.
Currently, 45 Kyrgyz prisoners are serving sentences in Uzbekistan, and 96 Uzbek prisoners are serving sentences in Kyrgyzstan.
The prisoners will be exchanged through the "Dostlik"/"Dostuk" border crossing.
The document establishes reimbursement for the costs of transferring prisoners, a dispute resolution mechanism, and official communication languages.
The Prosecutor General's Offices of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan are responsible for the implementation of the agreement.
The importance of the agreement:
The deputies noted that this agreement will serve to socially rehabilitate prisoners, maintain ties with their families, and strengthen cooperation between countries.
The Kyrgyz parliament, Jogorku Kenesh, has also approved the law. If the Senate also approves the document, the agreement will officially enter into force.
