Uyghur jailed for 25 years in China: UN condemns sentence
An Australian nurse has launched an active campaign to free her Uyghur husband, Mulizati Thayer, who was previously held in China illegally by the UN.
The fact is that in 2020, Thayer was sentenced to 25 years in prison on charges of "separatism" and "terrorism." The sentence was handed down just as he and his wife were about to fly to Melbourne. Lawyers say the sentence is completely unfair.
According to the UN, the Chinese government has failed to provide any credible evidence against him. The detention decisions are based primarily on the following:
— his/her Uyghur nationality;
— Belief in Islam;
— Being in Turkey.
Thayer has been arrested three times before without a warrant: in 2017, he was held in a "re-education camp" for 10 months, where he endured various hardships.
