An agreement was reached on the proposal of a common Turkish alphabet consisting of 34 letters. Each letter of the proposed alphabet represents a different phoneme found in Turkic languages

On September 9-11, the 3rd meeting of the Common Alphabet Commission of the Turkic World was held in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan.

At the meeting, organized in cooperation with the Turkish Academy, which is headquartered in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, and the Turkish Language Society of Turkey, it was announced that a project of a common alphabet for Turkic languages was developed using the information obtained in the field of the common alphabet and the experience of the commission's 2-year activity.

In the statement, it was noted that the draft of the Latin-based common Turkish alphabet, first proposed by scientists in 1991, was thoroughly reviewed, and the members of the commission made the necessary decisions on the issues to be developed in this draft of the alphabet.

"As a result of this self- sacrificing work, an agreement was reached on the proposal of a common Turkish alphabet consisting of 34 letters. Each letter of the proposed alphabet represents different phonemes found in the Turkic languages."

The statement emphasized that the successful conclusion of the meeting is of historical importance, and it was emphasized that "the development of the common Turkish alphabet is the development of mutual understanding and cooperation between the Turkish peoples , as well as the preservation of their linguistic heritage ."

The statement called on " all relevant institutions to actively support the implementation of the agreement on the proposed common Turkish alphabet ."
