Thailand decides to extradite 48 Uyghurs to China

The World Uyghur Congress (WUC) reiterated its demand that the Thai government immediately halt the deportation of 48 Uyghurs to China on February 27, 2025.

According to the WUC, if Uyghurs are deported, they risk torture, enforced disappearances, and other serious human rights abuses by the Chinese government.

"Thailand must stop deporting these Uyghur refugees who have been illegally detained for over a decade. Sending them back to China would be tantamount to a death sentence," WUC leader Turgunjon Alovuddin was quoted as saying.

"The international community must take coordinated and urgent measures to ensure their safety and demand their release."

It is alleged that the Uyghurs at risk of deportation are part of a group that fled persecution in East Turkestan and have been arbitrarily detained in Thailand since 2014.

At that time, 109 people were returned to China, despite assurances given by the Thai government to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

Despite repeated appeals for international assistance, these refugees have been denied legal representation, humanitarian assistance, and resettlement opportunities.

As reported by WUC, Thailand's decision to deport these individuals violates international law, particularly the principle of non-refoulement, which prohibits the return of individuals to countries where they would face serious harm.
