Russians are moving from the Orthodox part of Cyprus to the Muslim part
About 20,000 Russians and Ukrainians currently live in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Many Russians are moving from the Greek Orthodox part of the island to the Muslim part due to Western sanctions.
The Economist writes that Russians living on the island are moving to the northern part of the island due to Western sanctions, which include the Greek part of Cyprus.
The magazine notes that it is difficult to estimate the exact number of Russians living in the north, but Nicosia-based demographer Mete Khatai estimates that there are currently about 20,000 Russians and Ukrainians there.
At the same time, writes The Economist, this complicated the situation on the island, because the population of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is small and is about 550 thousand people.
The magazine mentions that by 2022, many wealthy Russians have flowed into the Greek sector of Cyprus. Even Limassol, the second largest city of the Republic of Cyprus, is called "Limassolgrad" by local residents due to the large number of Russians.
