Kyrgyzstan proposes regulation of weddings and funerals

A draft law proposing to combat wastefulness at funerals, weddings, and other family events in Kyrgyzstan has been submitted for public discussion, Kloop reported.

The draft law provides for a number of prohibitions:

- It is prohibited to slaughter small animals, horses, or cattle at funerals;

- after the deceased is buried, a memorial service may be held three days later with the slaughter of a horse or cattle;

- 7-day, 40-day and annual holidays are prohibited;

- It is forbidden to invite more than 250 people to a wedding, and only one head of cattle or horse can be slaughtered;

- no more than 100 guests can attend the bridal shower;

- if the wedding and the bridal shower are held together, no more than 350 people can be invited;

- No more than three cars are allowed in a wedding procession and other restrictions.

In case of violation of these prohibitions, it is proposed to fine the event organizer 300,000 Kyrgyz soums (≈44.5 million soums), and the owner of the institution 200,000 Kyrgyz soums (≈29.6 million soums).

According to MP Zamirbek Mamasodikov, the initiator of the bill, in recent years, Kyrgyz people have been spending too much money on various festive events, which is "seriously damaging the family budget." Often, families are forced to take out loans to hold such events, which leads to disastrous consequences, including divorce.
