Kyrgyzstan proposes fines for wearing masks in public

The Kyrgyz parliament is discussing a bill that would impose a fine of 20,000 soms for wearing a face mask or burqa in public places.

MP Dastan Bekeshev opposed the initiative, arguing that since the mask is worn more by women from socially vulnerable groups, such a measure could further exacerbate their situation.

There have also been concerns in the past that such bans are contrary to democratic principles. There are mixed views among the public about the draft law, which requires broad discussion.
