Kazakhstan's president wants to launch major reform

In an address to the nation, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced that the country's parliament will be reformed.

According to Tokayev's plan, a unicameral parliament should be established instead of the current bicameral parliament.

He also recalled that he had been the leader of the Senate for decades and that talk of reforming the legislature had been going on for 20 years.

"Given the unusual nature of the reform, it will take at least a year to discuss it. After that, it will be possible to hold a nationwide referendum in 2027, and then make the necessary amendments to the Constitution. All issues related to the fate of the state should be resolved only with the consent of the people," the President of Kazakhstan said.

According to the politician, the current composition of the Majlis will operate as usual until the end of its term. Political parties will have the opportunity to prepare for the competition during this time.
