Kazakhstan government bans May 9 march
Kazakh cities were not allowed to hold marches similar to Russia's "Immortal Regiment" on May 9.
According to Current Times, the administration of Almaty, the country's largest city, has refused to hold the event.
In Pavlodar and Petropavlovsk, where the Russian-speaking population is large, authorities proposed holding the event online and posting photos of front-line workers on special LED screens.
Officials are citing a lack of available space as the reason for the ban.
Any attempt to circumvent the ban will be considered an unauthorized rally, which could result in fines or arrest.
Nevertheless, supporters of the "Immortal Regiment" sent an appeal to the President of Kazakhstan with the flag of the USSR.
They called themselves "heirs of victory" and insisted that there was nothing wrong with Soviet symbols.
