It was proposed to implement Uzbekistan's experience of adaptation of returnees from conflict regions in other regions
The UN Counter-Terrorism Office evaluated Uzbekistan's experience of reintegration (re-adjustment) of citizens returning from areas of armed conflict as an advanced model at the international level and suggested its implementation in other regions. This was reported by Gazeta.uz.
In 2024, at the initiative of the President of Uzbekistan, a regional council of experts on the reintegration of persons returning from armed conflict areas was established. This council operates under the auspices of the UN Counter-Terrorism Office and is implemented in cooperation with countries in the region.
The main goal of the Council is to reintegrate people returned from the zone of armed conflict into society.
Importance of repatriation
Since 2019, Uzbekistan has repatriated more than 530 of its citizens (mostly women and children) from areas of armed conflict, enabling them to receive medical, social and psychological assistance. Also, programs such as vocational training and job placement were introduced.
Vladimir Voronkov, head of the UN Counter-Terrorism Office, highlighted the experience of Uzbekistan as an advanced example at the international level. According to him, Uzbekistan's human rights-based approach and reintegration process can be applied to other parts of the world.
UNICEF continues to provide assistance to Uzbekistan in the social and psychological rehabilitation of children who are victims of armed conflicts. The organization pays special attention to the protection of children and their education.
US support
The US representative at the UN expressed his support for repatriation and reintegration processes of Uzbekistan.
The regional council of experts serves as an important platform for spreading the experience of Central Asia to the world. Kaha Imnadze, head of the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia, noted this initiative as a unique solution and noted that it can be implemented in other countries as well.
Uzbekistan's initiative to rehabilitate people returned from armed conflict areas is significant not only regionally, but also internationally. This human rights-based approach contributes to increasing the country's global reputation. Cooperation and exchange of experience between the countries of Central Asia, as well as the support of the international community will make efforts in this field more successful.
