Heavy rain causes flash floods and mudslides in Mecca

Heavy rain and flash floods hit Mecca on January 7. Saudi Arabia's official SPA news agency reported that the rain covered many districts of the city.

Photos and videos circulating on local and social media showed streets, alleys, and roads in the city flooded. In some places, cars and motorbikes were swept away by the water. Economic damage was caused by the flooding of workplaces and shops in Mecca.

Saudi Arabia's National Meteorological Center had warned of heavy rain, wind, and hail, but the rapid flow of floodwaters severely affected the city's infrastructure.

There have been no official reports of casualties or injuries as a result of the flood. The regional authorities and emergency services have urged citizens to take precautions and said that work is currently underway to clean up the floodwaters.
