Gulnara Karimova transferred to a penal colony

Gulnara Karimova, the daughter of Uzbekistan's first president Islam Karimov, has been transferred to colony number 42 in the Zangiota district. The transfer took place on New Year's Eve, Platina.uz reported.

Karimova had been serving her sentence in the 21st women's prison in the same district until then. She was sentenced to 13 years and 4 months in prison in 2020 on new charges.

The first criminal case against Gulnara Karimova was opened in 2013. In 2015, she was sentenced to 5 years of restricted freedom. In 2017, she was sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment, but this sentence was later replaced with 5 years of restricted freedom.

While under house arrest, she was arrested again for violating the rules. In 2020, she was convicted on additional charges and sentenced to 13 years and 4 months in prison. Since then, Karimova has been serving her sentence in Women's Prison No. 21.

The practice of transferring prisoners to residential colonies is used after they have served part of their sentence. In such colonies, the terms of the sentence are somewhat lighter and prisoners have the opportunity to engage in socially useful work.
