EU's €150 billion defense fund: France and Germany clash over Turkey
A proposed €150 billion defense investment plan by the European Union (EU) has sparked disagreements between France and Germany. Berlin is proposing to include Turkey in the program, while Paris is insisting on funding only European manufacturers.
Who gets priority?
Germany has argued that the funds should also be used by the EU's external partners - Britain, Norway, Switzerland and Turkey. Chancellor Olaf Scholz has stressed the importance of cooperation with external allies to strengthen the EU's defense.
France, however, insists that the funds should be spent only on weapons produced in the EU. President Emmanuel Macron has opposed spending the funds outside the EU, emphasizing Europe's military independence.
Threats to the defense plan
Brussels diplomats are concerned that the disagreement could slow down the implementation of the €150 billion fund. A €1.5 billion European defense industry program was previously delayed by French restrictions on the use of parts made outside the EU.
Turkey's role and possible scenarios
As a NATO member, Turkey plays an important role in Europe's defense industry, especially in the production of drones and strike systems. German support could further strengthen Turkey's role in ensuring European security.
The EU is negotiating a solution to the dispute. Despite French opposition, the fund is expected to be approved by a majority vote, but Macron's stance could delay it. EU leaders and defense industry representatives are expected to discuss how to resolve the issue in the coming days.
